Senate Debates Bill Addressing Tax Breaks for Oil and Clean Energy Companies
The Senate voted 92-4 to begin debate on S. 2204, repealing tax breaks for oil companies and extending tax breaks for clean energy companies. Opponents will have another chance to block the bill later this week if Majority Leader Harry Re…id (D-Nev.) moves to end debate and vote on passage. Such a motion would require 60 votes and it’s unclear if Republicans will go along: Each side says they are happy to debate this bill in the context of high gas prices, but Republicans may not want to allow an actual up-or-down vote on passage of a bill that would take away $4 billion in tax breaks for the oil industry, a dependable GOP ally.
